WordPress as a CMS

by Jason Koning

I’ve started building a custom theme on top of  WordPress – to a print designers spec. Whilst the visual aspect does indeed look like it’s been penned by a print designer, the actual implementation of the static xhtml/css framework I built of the design, has thus far been incredibly easy to put on top of WordPress.

Far easier than I would have imagined in fact.

There’s a few really good resources out there for this kind of thing.

Web based;
Installing WordPress Locally
Building a Custom WordPress Theme
Moving and Exporting WordPress

Ebook;
Rockstar WordPress Designer

This covers most of the bases for starters, what I’m looking at now is how to easily create a dynamic (multi-level) navigation system…

Cushy CMS

by Jason Koning

Just a quick plug for some clever guys based in my neighbouring country – Australia (in my favourite city no less). I’ve implemented their solution for one of my ‘day job’ clients, and two of my own. In both cases it has proven to be more than adequate for their needs. One of those clients is based in Australia (I’m obviously in New Zealand) so installing something like Adobe Contribute on-site (remember this is an already established static site) would not of been very practical from a budgetary perspective.

They have a free option and a subscription based service (which allows you to brand the content management solution as if it were your own).

It’s another great solution to add to your arsenal of options.
